Junior Kindergarten (Four year olds)

The Junior Kindergarten Program provides a stimulating and enriching environment that fosters creativity, self-confidence, and critical thinking. The children are nurtured emotionally, socially, and academically to achieve their potential and feel valued as learners. Skills are taught through a thematic approach with emphasis on variety and various learning modalities. A combination of small group instruction and whole group activities allows the children to develop as cooperative learners. The Junior Kindergarten experience fosters a safe learning environment and fuels the children’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.

Math

Our Mathematics program focuses on teaching concepts through problem solving based on everyday situations to develop critical thinking strategies. The content strands of measurement, geometry, numeration, patterning, sorting/classifying, money, time, numeral writing, and number operations are emphasized. The children use concrete objects to manipulate, graph, and measure. Frequent practice of basic skills through mathematical games enhances the students’ understanding of the concepts. While working in small groups, partnerships, or collaborative groups, the children experience mathematics and learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to the world around them.

Literacy Program

The aim of the literacy curriculum is to teach children to read and write through a multi-sensory phonetic program. Through the use of puppets, actions, pictures, and music, the children are taught the 42 sounds of the English language. While engaging in “story time,” the children are introduced to the elements of story. Building upon their understanding of story elements, the children assume the roles of authors and illustrators during their writing workshop experience. In addition, the children are provided with a multitude of opportunities to explore language through kinesthetic movements and tactile experiences. At the Junior Kindergarten level, children also acquire literacy skills by engaging in dramatization activities that bring printed text to “life.” Through our dynamic literacy program, the children develop the skills that are needed to become successful readers, writers, and speakers.

ACS (Academic Curricular Support)

ACS is a unique opportunity for children to explore various content areas through an engaging and interactive format. During ACS, children participate in activities through an integrated, thematic experience. Via music, movement, drama, art, science, and social studies, children learn skills and concepts that are related to specific themes. Exploration is a key component of ACS, as children are strongly encouraged to engage in hand-on activities and experimentation. All of the concepts in ACS are taught through music and movement. In addition, thinking strategies are developed through experiences that call upon the children to think in a creative and critical fashion.
